Most graduate programs do not require their applicants to receive a minimum GRE score in order to be reviewed for admission, but students should nonetheless be aware of departmental and program averages, because these scores reliably indicate testing expectations. Individual academic departments are usually free to establish their own standards, and as a result, there can be quite a bit of variety in mean GRE performance within a single institution. At Tufts University, for example, there is a 10-point difference between the mean GRE quantitative score of the master of arts program in urban and environmental policy & planning (153) and the average quantitative score of a graduate student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (163). These departments have very similar mean scores on the verbal portion of the GRE (159 and 158 respectively). The best course of action for aspiring graduate students is to make every effort to exceed average GRE scores on all sections of the test, whatever they may be, as those applicants will be highly competitive.

Strong GRE scores reliably lead to offers of admission from selective graduate schools. Manhattan Review's GRE teaching has facilitated acceptance to world-class institutions such as Harvard, Princeton, Brown, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, Yale, Cornell, Dartmouth, the University of Chicago, Stanford, the University of California-Berkeley, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northwestern, Emory, Vanderbilt, Duke, Georgetown, Oxford, Cambridge, King's College London, the University of Toronto, the University of British Columbia, Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, the University of Johannesburg, and many other top schools around the world. At Manhattan Review, we're pleased to report that our former GRE clients have become equally successful in their professional lives after graduate school. Some of our past Manila students are now back home and employed by the city's best companies, such as Radio Corporation of the Philippines, San Miguel Corporation, Puregold Price Club, Land Bank of the Philippines, and 2GO Group. Our past Manila GRE students have also been hired by New York Life Insurance, CVS Health, Lockheed Martin, United Continental Holdings, JP Morgan Chase, Microsoft, and other Fortune 500 companies.

Meet a Manila GRE Tutor: Gabrielle H.

Gabrielle H. has been a GRE educator in the United States and in the Philippines for nine years, and she has taught GRE prep to more than 800 students in group classroom and individual learning modalities. Her students have come from almost every academic subject relevant to the GRE and almost as many countries and native languages, and she enjoys a strong reputation as a teacher who can get results regardless of a given GRE learner's background.

A native of New Orleans, Louisiana and a resident of Manila since 2016, Gabrielle earned her bachelor's degree in sociology from Tulane University. She initially planned to become a police officer, but when she tried teaching as a long-term substitute at a public school, she was hooked. She then completed a master's degree in education at Louisiana State University, and she has never looked back. Gabrielle is now one of the most prolific GRE teachers on our Manila staff, with a full roster of students and a waiting list.
